5 Israeli Pounds banknote Pop Art Warhol style
This 5 lirot note issued by Israel in 1968 features a portrait of Albert Einstein, famous as the father of modern physics and for his theory of general relativity. A view of the Atomic Reactor at Nahal Sorek is on the back.
The Israeli pound (Hebrew: Israeli lirot) was the currency of the State of Israel from June 1952 until 23 February 1980.
The British Mandate of Palestine, which administered the territory now known as Israel prior to 1948, issued the Palestine pound- a currency equal in value and pegged to the UK Pound. Israel inherited the Palestine pound but, shortly after the establishment of the state, new banknotes were issued by the London-based Anglo-Palestine bank of the Zionist movement. The pegging to the UK Pound was abolished on January 1, 1954.
